A residential staff member had a huge influence on her and became like a grandmother to her, something Fatima never had. Stephanie grew up in generational poverty, became a mom as a teenager and dropped out of school. She was sleeping with her baby girl on a couch in a crowded mobile home. According to the committee agenda, Volunteers of America (VOA) are planning to close the Granada House by the end of this June, leaving up to 100 women on the streets.

Individual and group counseling, support groups, and family therapy for adult and child survivors. Following best practices, Granada House does not offer counseling with the abusive individual. Onsite or scattered site housing, rent and/or utility subsidies, housing-specific case management, resource referrals, and employment guidance for six to 24 months. “Granada House helped me a lot. Alejandra has also taken other classes including Parenting 101, Relationship Classes, and Self-Care classes. Stephanie’s last requirement was to find full-time employment. She has been living in the same duplex for two years, which is longer than she has lived anywhere in her life. Brittani and her boyfriend are working on their credit score so they can buy a house.

She has a scholarship and is attending Metro State University of Denver where she is working toward an RN degree. She lives downtown with her son and works part-time while attending college full-time. We offer FREE self-sufficiency programming to parenting teen moms.

The Salvation Army’s transitional programs move people from the Granada House Review streets to stability to employment and finally to a home. At Granada House, children find a safe, alcohol and drug free place to call home while their parents get back on their feet. Granada House provides a safe and clean environment supported by 24-hour, seven-day-a-week case management and supportive services.

Aaron Hedge, originally from Colorado, earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University in June 2023. His writing explores environmental issues and the relationship between humans and animals. He grew up in a Christian home and wants to write more about end times theology. Erin moved to town from Idaho to attend Gonzaga University, fell in love with Spokane and hasn’t left yet. They are a queer storyteller, and when they’re not pounding Red Bulls (not sponsored) and typing frantically, you can find her on and off stage at a few of the theatres in town.

Janelle and her boys eventually became homeless — sleeping in a car, on the ground, or in homeless shelters. Sleeping in a car was actually a good night because the ground was cold and the shelters were crowded, smelly and scary. She was 12 when her parents’ fights and addictions led them to split. Although Janelle and her brothers were already used to living in chaos, now they were left on the sidelines, trying to take care of themselves. Janelle ended up meeting an older boy – and they connected deeply as they shared stories from their rough childhoods. The Salvation Army Medford provides transitional living for those facing homelessness.
