Spokane womens shelter Granada House says it will close its doors in June

Alejandra has also taken other classes including Parenting 101, Relationship Classes, and Self-Care classes. Stephanie’s last requirement was to find full-time employment. She has been living in the same duplex for two years, which is longer than she has lived anywhere in her life. Brittani and her boyfriend are working on their credit score so they can buy a house.

She has a scholarship and is attending Metro State University of Denver where she is working toward an RN degree. She lives downtown with her son and works part-time while attending college full-time. We offer FREE self-sufficiency programming to parenting teen moms.

The Salvation Army’s transitional programs move people from the Granada House Review streets to stability to employment and finally to a home. At Granada House, children find a safe, alcohol and drug free place to call home while their parents get back on their feet. Granada House provides a safe and clean environment supported by 24-hour, seven-day-a-week case management and supportive services.

Aaron Hedge, originally from Colorado, earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University in June 2023. His writing explores environmental issues and the relationship between humans and animals. He grew up in a Christian home and wants to write more about end times theology. Erin moved to town from Idaho to attend Gonzaga University, fell in love with Spokane and hasn’t left yet. They are a queer storyteller, and when they’re not pounding Red Bulls (not sponsored) and typing frantically, you can find her on and off stage at a few of the theatres in town.

Janelle and her boys eventually became homeless — sleeping in a car, on the ground, or in homeless shelters. Sleeping in a car was actually a good night because the ground was cold and the shelters were crowded, smelly and scary. She was 12 when her parents’ fights and addictions led them to split. Although Janelle and her brothers were already used to living in chaos, now they were left on the sidelines, trying to take care of themselves. Janelle ended up meeting an older boy – and they connected deeply as they shared stories from their rough childhoods. The Salvation Army Medford provides transitional living for those facing homelessness.

Preble Street assumed operations of Granada House on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from Penobscot Community Health Center (PCHC). In fall 2023, PCHC had announced that due to financial considerations, it would close Granada House – its low-barrier 56-bed emergency shelter in Bangor – in fall 2024 unless another provider could take over operations. For more than 50 years, Granada House Foundation’s mission has been one of social justice for people with disabilities.

Since becoming a Granada House Mom, Alejandra has been able to finish her GED through Penn Foster in February of 2022 and is incredibly thankful for the support and motivation she had through Granada House Staff. She attended the GED graduation in May 2022 and gave the graduation speech. Janely, Alejandra’s 9-month-old-daughter, is also enrolled in the Early Learning Program. At first, Alejandra said, “I was hesitant because of bad experiences I had with babysitters for Janely, but I got to meet the staff and they’re really nice and I’m never far away from Janely which is really great”.

  • Alejandra hid her pregnancy until she was about six months along, and eventually told her parents and friends.
  • The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
  • Through our services, our community participation, and our advocacy, we make these ideas reality, each and every day.

It’s an interesting story that The Spokesman covered in detail, though despite all Moss’s claims to the media, at the time of his termination, Brown had only contracted with Archbright once, for $27,000 worth of services. Welcome to CIVICS, where we break down the week’s municipal meetings throughout the Inland Northwest, so you can get involved and speak out about the issues you care about. Preble Street is excited to become a bigger part of the Bangor community and will continue to fill in the budget gaps with the private support from community members and other funders that help us keep the doors open.

Shelters also divert the most vulnerable from relying on the most expensive services like hospital emergency rooms, jails, police, emergency response systems, and the child welfare system. Since 2003, Granada House Colorado has transformed the lives of teen moms and their children across the Denver-metro area. Our vision is to transform the lives of teen moms and their children.

High School & GED Graduation

Brittani named her baby girl Deavyne and set out to create a different life for her daughter than she had known growing up. One of her friends told her about Granada House, where she earned her GED so she could go on to college. She also met with her Granada House mentor regularly and took Parenting classes at Granada House. The board will hear a presentation about the district’s Native education program, which lists goals and outcomes of its program to improve the education of Indigenous students. The program emphasized outdoor education, project-based learning and culture. The presentation slides say the program has improved graduation rates by 20%, from 67% in 2016 to 87% in 2024.

City council to end state of emergency set by mayor for ICE protests

Still, in her committee draft lists, she isn’t on a single committee with Zappone. Also on the list for discussion is an “arborist ordinance update.” We genuinely have no idea what this is about and couldn’t find details in the agenda, so hopefully our curiosity will be sated come noon. It’s actually just up for its first reading, where you can give public comment on it, and is scheduled for a vote on January 27. These subcontracts are in the consent agenda for a vote tonight.

  • The Salvation Army’s transitional programs move people from the streets to stability to employment and finally to a home.
  • Granada House also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment.
  • His writing explores environmental issues and the relationship between humans and animals.
  • 2024 was an eventful year for freshman City Council Member Al Merkel, and his colleagues want to talk about it!
  • At Granada House Foundation, we believe neighborhoods and communities are enriched when everyone in them participates to the fullest extent possible.

Fatima and Julian moved into the house and started making friends with other moms and staff. A residential staff member had a huge influence on her and became like a grandmother to her, something Fatima never had. Stephanie grew up in generational poverty, became a mom as a teenager and dropped out of school. She was sleeping with her baby girl on a couch in a crowded mobile home. According to the committee agenda, Volunteers of America (VOA) are planning to close the Granada House by the end of this June, leaving up to 100 women on the streets.

Individual and group counseling, support groups, and family therapy for adult and child survivors. Following best practices, Granada House does not offer counseling with the abusive individual. Onsite or scattered site housing, rent and/or utility subsidies, housing-specific case management, resource referrals, and employment guidance for six to 24 months. “Granada House helped me a lot. I was scared. Granada House helped me by teaching me about responsibility, budgeting, structure and spending time with my son.”

Granada House also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment. Her family dynamics were difficult, and at an early age she felt neglected and left to fend for herself. As a preteen, she was given freedom without the tools to navigate it.
